Hanger Institute Publishes Final Study in Landmark Mobility Analysis of Amputees (MAAT) Series

04/05/2022

AUSTIN, Texas, April 5, 2022 – Hanger, Inc. has completed and published the seventh and final study in its Mobility Analysis of Amputees (MAAT) series, which represents the largest national analyses of mobility among lower limb prosthetic users. The series, which has been published regularly by the Hanger Institute for Clinical Research and Education since 2017, clarifies the concept of prosthetic mobility as it relates to considerations such as satisfaction, quality of life, comorbid health conditions, and prosthetic component choices.

The latest and final chapter of the series titled MAAT 7: Normative Mobility Values for Lower Limb Prosthesis Users of Varying Age, Etiology, and Amputation Level, was published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and analyzed data from nearly 12,000 lower limb prosthesis users, who were grouped by age, amputation etiology, and above vs. below-knee amputation. MAAT 7 established normative values for each group, ultimately expanding known benchmarks from two etiologies across four age groups, to four etiologies (cancer, congenital, trauma, and diabetes/dysvascular) across seven age groups.

“This final MAAT study has helped us develop a more meaningful comparison for individual patients, allowing for more personalized goal setting, and ultimately helping clinicians better meet patients where they are in their journey,” said James Campbell, PhD, Hanger Chief Clinical Officer. “Hanger is proud of the incredible impact the MAAT series has had on our profession over the last five years. Together with our research partners, we have advanced outcomes-based care and revolutionized the way O&P leverages clinical research to discover best practices for patients. The MAAT series will serve as a springboard that continues to drive advances in evidence-based practice within orthotic and prosthetic care.”

In addition to the final study, the preceding studies and their topics are:

  • MAAT 1: Quality of life and satisfaction are strongly related to mobility for patients with a lower limb prosthesis
  • MAAT 2: The limited impact of comorbid health conditions on the mobility of lower limb prosthesis users
  • MAAT 3: Matching individuals based on comorbid health reveals improved function for above-knee prosthesis users with microprocessor knee technology
  • MAAT 4: Classification tree analysis for probability of lower limb prosthesis user functional potential
  • MAAT 5: Impact of five common prosthetic ankle-foot categories for individuals with diabetic/dysvascular amputation
  • MAAT 6: Mobility, satisfaction, and quality of life among long-term dysvascular/diabetic prosthesis users—results of a cross-sectional analysis
